The Wool Store, c. 1875

Sleeps 20 | Bedrooms 9 | Bathrooms 6

Established in 1815, Bathurst was Australia’s first inland European settlement. Initially planned as an administrative centre for government officials, soldiers and convicts stationed west of the Blue Mountains, it quickly became critical to the colony’s growing pastoral enterprises. The Wool Store was built in 1875 as a bulk-delivery store for selling grain and wool.

When owners & hosts Hamish and Mez Keith first stepped inside the building, it was in a state of disrepair and neglect. Despite this, they were immediately transported back to New York City where they’d lived for five years. Captivated by the high ceilings, brickwork, original floors and industrial windows, they had a clear vision for The Wool Store’s restoration and conversion. Approaching the project with a deep respect for its commercial past, they slowly began to uncover & restore the heritage features of what is an important part of Bathurst’s history.

Now, The Wool Store stands proudly in Bathurst’s heritage precinct, featuring the original loading doors, gantry and hooks used to haul up wool bales from the street to the top floor. Striking hardwood ceilings and beams are now exposed, alongside iconic Bathurst triple-brick walls, once covered by layers of paint. Five beautifully finished, luxury apartments are reminiscent of an industrial, character-filled New York loft space, but with an undeniably Australian spirit.

Each of the bespoke luxury apartments are unique in layout and features. All apartments have their own full modern kitchen stocked with chef’s essentials, comfortable beds fitted with premium linens, and stunning bathrooms complete with a range of bathing products by Leif. Complimentary WiFi, and a television where guests can access their own streaming accounts, such as Netflix, is also provided.

The Penthouse is a spectacular New York loft style apartment, sleeping up to 8 guests, making it perfect for small groups of friends & family. Four bedrooms include a loft bedroom, and master with ensuite and walk-in robe. There’s also two bathrooms, both with heated floors. The Penthouse was designed to entertain, with 360 degree views, custom-designed furniture including mahogany pool table, a cosy gas fireplace for the winter, and cross ventilation for a cool breeze during summer.

The Soho Studio apartment suits couples seeking an intimate escape. It features 13 foot ceilings, private entryway and its own azalea garden courtyard, complete with fire pit. The Upper East Side is a one-bedroom apartment that boasts spectacular views across the Bathurst heritage precinct. Natural light spills through this gorgeous space, that features a full size bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen.

The Upper West Side apartment is perfect for solo travellers, or a couple. Drawing inspiration directly from New York apartment living, the gourmet kitchen includes a built-in eating space. Bathed in natural light, enjoy breakfast while gazing out across the city. The Midtown is a generous two bedroom apartment that sleeps 4, ideal for families, and also enjoys spectacular views over historic rooftops.

All guests are invited to enjoy a tranquil communal garden that overlooks The Wool Store’s front facade.

And embracing Bathurst’s contemporary focus on culture and creativity, The Wool Store also has a multi-purpose space for hire. Located on the ground floor, the Brooklyn Studio is a generous space for exhibitions, creative workshops, rehearsals or business events, right in the heart of the city.
