History

Within walking distance of Taralga’s main street dotted with 19th century buildings, Woolbrook Cottage was built in 1890. A timeless double-fronted timber cottage, with wraparound verandah offering welcome shade on hot summer days, Woolbrook still has its original windows with pretty leadlight, timber-lined ceilings, original kitchen fireplace, and stable building out the back.

In 1916, Woolbrook Cottage served as a local hospital, with Dr Thomas as the doctor in residence. Quite possibly a controversial character, he sued a town resident for saying the doctor was a drinker, costing the local man 300 pounds in damages!

The traditional land of the Gundungurra people, Taralga has a rich history of farming across a range of industries, including fine wool, prime lambs and beef, fruit, and wine production. Your host Rosey and her family live on a cattle and sheep property just outside Taralga, and her husband’s family have been farming in the district for over a century. Throughout Woolbrook Cottage, you’ll find many special tributes to their life on the farm.

Accommodation

You’re invited to come and experience a quieter, slower pace of life at Woolbrook Cottage. Loving restored, the cottage offers truly authentic country accommodation, with gorgeous period character in every room. An interior of previously owned, vintage and antique furnishings is in perfect keeping with the cottage’s historic charm, as well as being beautifully sustainable.

Woolbook Cottage sleeps up to six guests, and both families and pets are most welcome. Three bedrooms, two queen and one double bedroom all have luxurious pure linen sheets for a dreamy sleep and leisurely lie-ins. One queen room also has its own private ensuite bathroom, and there’s an additional bathroom outside with heated towel rail, plus washing machine.

Cook up a storm in the fully-equipped, eat-in kitchen, with Ilve stovetop and oven, microwave and dishwasher, even a wine fridge in the pantry - along with some delicious locally-made rocky road! The large dining table seats eight, so you can enjoy cooking for friends and family.

Curl up in the lounge room on a vintage velvet sofa or comfortable arm chair in front of the slow combustion fire, with plenty of fire wood for your use. Here, sitting by the fire sipping red wine on cooler, rainy days is a blissful way to spend an afternoon, and a reminder of life’s simple pleasures.

Outside, you’ll love relaxing on the wraparound verandah taking in views of your countryside surrounds. There’s a secure yard for dogs, and also plenty of green space for children to run around, along with a tree house to explore. And if you feel like a barista coffee or hearty pub lunch, Taralga’s Orchard Street is just a short stroll from your accommodation.

We felt instantly at home in this charming historic cottage. Beautifully and thoughtfully presented, with everything you could possibly need, the fireplace was a dream on rainy days...and there was plenty of space for the dogs to run around in the secure yard outside.
