History

An elegant Edwardian homestead, The White House was built c. 1906, directly across from the Hawkesbury River in Spencer Village. Butcher boats commenced trading on the Hawkesbury in the early 1900s. Without modern-day benefits of ice or refrigeration, butcher boats brought meat supplies to people all along the river. Aside from providing food, the tallow was used for a range of domestic purposes, including soap making.

Lovingly restored, The White House still features original period details throughout. Externally, a wide wraparound verandah with ornate fretwork commands stunning river views. Inside, history lovers will appreciate high ceilings, leadlight windows, original fireplace surrounds, internal fretwork in the entry hall, and polished timber floors.

Accommodation

Private and quiet, yet just a short stroll to the General Store and wharf across the road, The White House is the perfect holiday home for both couples and families, sleeping six guests in three double bedrooms. The interior has been comfortably furnished with an eclectic mix of original artwork, antiques, and contemporary pieces.

The bathroom features a spacious shower, fluffy towels, and a range of complimentary bath and skincare products. Relax in the deep clawfoot bath with a glass of wine and a good book.

A large chef’s kitchen awaits, fully equipped so you can cook your favourite meals. Dine at the six-seater table in the open plan living area, or outside in the fabulous undercover entertaining space, with outdoor dining area, pool table, and even a jacuzzi overlooking the river.

Small pets are also welcome, with an enclosed fenced area. Guests have the entire property to themselves, including beautifully manicured gardens and gently sloping lawns, perfect for an afternoon game of cricket followed by a BBQ!

Surrounded by nature, enjoy listening to the birds each morning, then take a walk down to the village for a coffee before heading across to the sparkling riverfront. A truly relaxing historic getaway, and an easy 90 minutes from Sydney’s CBD.

The perfect holiday house in the most beautiful spot. We enjoyed the small friendly village of Spencer, and the accommodation was perfect. We fished, kayaked and dined out, all without driving anywhere. The lawns were perfect for croquet, and we loved having a soak in the spa!
