The Provincial Hotel was built in 1909, designed by Ballarat architect Percy S. Richards. Recognised by the National Trust, very few examples of this architectural style have survived intact. The building combines Baroque, Art Nouveau and Norman design elements, and features two domed towers, a variety of window shapes and prominent chimneys, with original leadlight and front & rear staircases.

For over a century, the hotel has been home to many publicans and their clientele. However, its latest renovation takes The Provincial Hotel into a new era. Owners Simon & Gorgi Coghlan identified a market for luxury, boutique Ballarat accommodation, coupled with service that exceeds expectations. With its rich history and inherent charm, they both knew the iconic The Provincial Hotel was the perfect place to realise their vision.

Sleeping up to 56 guests in total, each of the hotel’s 23 stunning suites were individually styled by Gorgi Coghlan and local interior stylist Genevieve Manley to create a bespoke environment, with beautiful attention to detail. Eclectic furniture and fabrics, antiques and art have been uniquely curated to complement the history of the building, whilst providing a playful, sophisticated feel.

For short stays, Provincial Classic rooms provide a cosy, comfortable space with desk, and modern bathrooms with sustainably-sourced Eloura amenities. Lola Suites feature a king size bed and a spacious bathroom with walk-in shower. Lola Deluxe rooms feature a king sized bed, generously-sized bathroom with spa bath, and guests can choose to overlook the historic streetscape or the hotel’s courtyard. Balcony Suites feature king size beds, separate living area, and direct balcony access with views of Ballarat’s CBD.

Lola Apartments also feature deluxe king size beds & spacious bathrooms, a second bedroom with twin singles, plus their own separate living area, modern kitchen, and dining space - perfect for longer stays and families. Located on the ground floor, The Lola Two Bedroom Apartment is wheelchair accessible. All Lola Suite, Deluxe, Balcony and Apartment rooms feature luxurious Ashley & Co. amenities, and mini bars are stocked with a range of local products including limited release ‘Lola’ Larrikin Gin, by Kilderkin Distillery in Ballarat.

Friday & Saturday night bookings include a full breakfast the next morning in the hotel’s restaurant, Lola. With a nod to Parisian bistros, it’s a chic yet relaxed dining space, serving up European-inspired dishes created with seasonal, local produce. Named after gold rush figure Lola Montez, a Spanish courtesan-turned-countess, Lola was an actress, dancer, author, and also co-owned a French newspaper. In 1856, she danced her infamous Spider Dance at the Victoria Theatre in Ballarat (find quotes from her book in the restaurant bathrooms). Wednesday through Sunday, enjoy lunch or dinner in the restaurant, with new menus each week and a wine list featuring some of the finest natural & regionally sourced wines.

The hotel’s charming courtyard provides guests a beautiful outdoor area to relax in. In summertime, it’s a lovely light-filled green space, and in winter, gather round the fire pit. Enjoy a cocktail, wine or non-alcoholic beverage from Clara - a fun & quirky cocktail caravan! Named after Clara Seekamp, the first female editor of The Ballarat Times newspaper, The Hotel Provincial proudly celebrates Ballarat’s early trailblazing women.

The Provincial Hotel also caters for functions and special events, with several private spaces available to hire, including two beautifully-appointed private dining rooms with chandeliers and original fireplaces, the Lola Library, and the Meeting Room.

When booking, indulge in one of The Provincial Hotels packages for an extra special stay experience. And by booking direct, you’ll receive free parking, complimentary cocktails, and a late checkout. Just like staying at your exceptionally stylish best friend’s house, the team at The Provincial Hotel will cater to your every whim, and will ensure you leave feeling inspired, relaxed and delighted.
