Old Cobbin Homestead was built in 1864 for Mr James Thompson, a drover and well-respected local, his wife, and their nine children, set on a 7,000 acre sheep & cattle property. A. B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson was known to be a friend and guest of Mr Thompson’s, and the Ngarigo people used Cobbin Creek, which runs through the property, as a travelling route. Held in the same family for generations, Mrs. Thompson lived here until her 97th year as a great-great-grandmother. Countless memories are held within its walls - and now you’re invited to make memories here.
Full of period character and rustic charm, the homestead features original windows & doors, thick granite stone walls and chimneys, tongue and groove ceilings & walls, and original fireplaces. When first built, the homestead had a shingle roof with dormer windows, and an upstairs attic space for the servants, accessed via an external staircase. The attic, with its handcrafted roof beams is yet to be restored, but still houses the original dormer windows that owners & hosts Bliss and Gavin intend to reinstall one day.
Two bedrooms sleep up to seven guests, with families welcome. In the large master bedroom, snuggle up in the king sized bed with soft, pure linen sheets, or relax in the cosy velvet chair with a good book next to the window, warmed by the morning sun. The second bedroom has a bunk and two singles, and a trundle can be added upon request. All beds are fitted with a range of bedding from Cultiver linen, L&M Home, MCM House and Sheet Society, along with wool blankets for the winter months.
The homestead’s bathroom has a shower over bath, vintage touches, and heating to keep you nice & warm. Complimentary Australian-made Leif botanical body products are included, with luxurious towels from L&M Home. Adjacent to the bathroom is a laundry room with washing machine & dryer, making it easy to stay longer.
At the heart of the homestead is a fully-equipped country kitchen. Gather round the large farmhouse table next to the original fireplace, fitted with a Lopi wood heater. With cast iron cookware provided, it’s perfect for slow cooking, or if you prefer, there’s also a modern gas stovetop and oven. Along with pantry staples, you will find thoughtful extras like Snowy Mountains ground coffee, Grounded Pleasures hot chocolate, T2 leaf tea and possibly another surprise or two at this wonderfully appointed property.
In the cosy lounge room, there’s a huge linen sofa to curl up on, and leather wingback armchairs either side of a second wood heater - savour a good wine or whisky in beautiful glassware by the fire. Whilst the homestead offers complimentary WiFi, why not switch off and play a board game, share stories, or choose a book to read.
The front porch has lovely sunny spots to relax, including an antique rocking chair. Watch the sun peep through the trees, and listen to the farm come to life each morning. The homestead is set on 52 acres of beautiful farmland with creek frontage for hours of exploring, and in the home paddock, there’s a fire pit - end the day with a nightcap, while toasting marshmallows under a glittering night sky.

Moonbah, in the Snowy Mountains region of NSW, lies almost halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, and 2 hours inland from Merimbula on the South Coast. Moonbah is the perfect base from which to discover Jindabyne, only a few minutes away with many restaurants and pubs, and in winter, Thredbo or Perisher for skiiing. There’s lots on offer during summer time as well - go mountain biking or hiking, fly fishing for trout in the Thredbo river, and Thredbo Valley horse-riding school is open Spring through Autumn for trail rides and lessons. Visit one of the many festivals and markets held in the region throughout the year. Stop in at Wildbrumby Distillery for lunch & schapps tasting, and enjoy dinner at Crackenback Farm Restaurant, nestled in the picturesque Crackenback Valley, just a short drive from Old Cobbin Homestead.
