History

Holcombe Hill Farm was first owned by the Russell family, who arrived in Victoria in 1853. The property was kept in the family for several generations, until it was sold to the current owners in 2016. The original farmhouse was a tiny weatherboard, two room cottage with split shingle roof, dating to 1860. In 1903, the existing homestead was built directly on top of the early cottage, and a viewing window has been placed in one of the rooms so guests can see the original split shingle roof of the first dwelling.

By 2016, the homestead had not been lived in for several years, and was in need of significant repair. A full restoration was undertaken, including new foundations, the construction of a breezeway connecting the kitchen to the main house; and an additional two rooms added, creating an adjoining cottage with separate bathroom and living area.

The homestead is a classic example of the early Federation style, with beautiful heritage features. The kitchen still features original brickwork, fireplace, and alcoves for a cast iron stove and bread oven. A washroom existed to the right of the kitchen, and the original bricks remain in situ. Soaring ceilings, detailed cornicework, ornate fireplace surrounds, and warm polished floorboards also feature throughout.

To the side of the homestead, the original dairy still stands, dating to the 1860s. Guests can view this building upon request, which houses a display of historical artefacts uncovered during the restoration. Your hosts have also written a book about the homestead, farm, and surrounding area, which includes letters written in the early 20th century by the Russell family – it’s available for you to read during your stay.
