Flax at Duck Reach, c. 1895

Sleeps 3 | Bedrooms 2 | Bathroom 1

Like a scene from a J.R.R. Tolkien novel, perched high on a cliff overlooking the South Esk River, this c. 1895 bluestone & brick cottage feels like another world away, yet is just a few minutes from Launceston’s CBD. FLAX at Duck Reach is part of the historic Duck Reach estate, originally built to house workers at the nearby power station. The first publicly owned hydro-electric power station in Australia, it famously lit up Launceston for almost 60 years.

The heritage cottage has been carefully transformed by owners & hosts Katherine Corrie and architect husband Digby Hall, into a luxurious, adults-only escape. They chose to name the cottage FLAX after the sturdy linen fabric made from harvested Blue Flax Lily plants that grew abundantly in the area. The cottage has been carefully created to provide the perfect accommodation choice for couples, honeymooners, bushwalkers, nature lovers, bird watchers, historians, writers, remote workers or the solo intrepid traveller…a special place to relax & reconnect with your loved one, take time out for yourself, or simply to reconnect with Mother Nature.

Built from bluestone quarried on site, the cottage’s entire exterior is heritage-listed, and inside you’ll find the original doors, windows and hardware, beautiful high ceilings, the old fireplace surround, and even some leaning walls that add charm & character! The interior has been consciously styled with a curation of recycled & natural materials, including flax linen curtains, along with designer elements & quirky touches that add a unique feel to the space.

Accommodating up to three guests, there’s a stylishly-appointed main bedroom with queen bed & vintage velvet armchair, walk in robe, its own private balcony, and sumptuous pure linen bedding that will have you sleeping soundly through the night. The second bedroom is the perfect place for afternoon naps on the gorgeous antique day bed (doubling as a king single bed for a third guest if needed). The bathroom features a walk-in shower and complimentary Zero Co sustainable products.

In the cosy, light-filled living area, there’s a large Globe West sofa to relax on, 100% linen curtains, original Tasmanian and antique artworks, antique cedar buffet and repurposed dining table paired with gorgeous chairs. The cottage kitchen is simple but beautiful, and has everything you need to cook your favourite meals. Pantry staples are provided, as well as T2 tea and local Tassie Infuse Coffee. In the kitchen and throughout the cottage, Zero Co’s eco-friendly, sustainable cleaning products are used.

A magical outdoor sanctuary awaits - enjoy the sunny gardens, and Cataract Gorge is just footsteps away. Set amidst crown land reserves, the surrounding area is home to an array of bird life from fairy wrens to night owls, and Peregrine Falcons nesting in the cliffs. There is also a wide variety of native animals to spot, including echidnas & kangaroos, and a family of pademelons who often visit at dusk and dawn.

Steeped in history, book a stay at FLAX as your home away from home, and allow yourself to be transported to a bygone area, surrounded by boundless beauty.
