History

Nestled in the historic village of Evandale, Charleston Cottage was originally built as a combined shop and residence. With its charming Georgian facade, the cottage’s renovation was inspired by owner Lydia Nettlefold’s visit to Charleston Farmhouse in England. The home and meeting place of the Bloomsbury group in the early 1900s - English writers, philosophers and artists, including Virginia Wolfe - Charleston Farmhouse reflected a free and individualistic approach to interior design.

The cottage has been lovingly renovated to retain its heritage feel, with timber-lined ceilings, rough-sawn Tasmanian oak floors, original fireplace surrounds, windows and doors. Walls have been plastered with a beeswax & Marseille soap finish; and a curated collection of original artwork, antiques and vintage pieces feature throughout.

Accommodation

Charleston Cottage offers flexible accommodation for couples. Choose to book either the Virginia or Duncan Suites, both completely private - or the entire cottage, sleeping up to 10 guests, with children over 12 years of age welcome.

The Virginia Suite features two beautifully-appointed suites, a king and queen, and both have their own luxurious bathroom with copper fixtures. Aesop products are provided, and the king suite has a deep soaking bath. Fully self-contained, The Virginia Suite has a cosy sitting room and charming eat-in country kitchen, that opens onto a private sandstone courtyard and garden.

The Duncan Suite sleeps up to two guests, with a sumptuous king bed that can be converted into two king singles if required, and ensuite bathroom. There’s a quiet sitting room and functional, well-equipped kitchenette, opening onto a delightful private courtyard for al fresco dining.

Each suite has a double sofa bed, should additional sleeping space be required.

Kitchens are stocked with quality tableware, linens, and pantry staples including olive oil, tea & coffee. Included in your stay is a generous continental breakfast basket, with local artisan sourdough bread, homemade jam, butter, granola, yoghurt and fresh fruit, along with a bottle of local Broad Arrow wine.

After a day exploring the region, return to relax in front of the fire with a glass of wine, and choose from a range of board games and books. Charleston Cottage also has high speed WiFi, and is fully heated and air-conditioned - keeping you comfortable no matter the Tassie weather!

A dream weekend in this superb accommodation - everything was of the highest quality, and beautifully decorated with lovely beds and bathrooms! Evandale is charming and friendly, loved the Sunday market and surrounding countryside. Delicious food at the Clarendon Arms! Will definitely be back.
