History

Immerse yourself in Australia’s heritage with a visit to historic Tenterfield. With a rich history dating back to the traditional landowners, the town is located high in the NSW Tablelands region, just below the Queensland border. For thousands of years, one of the area’s most famous sites, Bald Rock, served as neutral ground for the Jukembal, Bundjalung and Kamilaroi nations. The largest granite monolith in the Southern Hemisphere, you can visit this spectacular natural landmark in Bald Rock National Park.

Tenterfield dates to 1851, and here you can trace the steps of Australia’s famous early settlers, including Banjo Patterson, Captain Thunderbolt and Sir Henry Parkes. Singer songwriter Peter Allen grew up in Tenterfield, forming the inspiration for his song Tenterfield Saddler. With so much to discover both in town & the surround region, a stay here is a must. Accommodating up to four adults, and perfectly located just a short stroll from the centre of town is The Bungalow & Ivy Leaf Chapel, sitting handsomely on 1.5 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens.

Built between 1915 and 1920 on the cusp of the Edwardian and Californian Bungalow architectural eras, it’s believed the guest lounge was once used as a classroom for boys from the local church. Owner & host Kim Thompson purchased the property in 2010, when it was little more than a homestead in a paddock. Drawn to the potential of the residence, it was the promise of the grounds that excited Kim. Recognising the unique climate The New England High Country offers, with its four distinct seasons, Kim has created a magical garden that’s a delight all year round, which guests are free to enjoy during their stay.

Accommodation

The Bungalow Bed & Breakfast is a cosy adult-only retreat for couples within the gracious country homestead. A quiet and private escape, from the wraparound verandah, guests can relax and enjoy sweeping views of the gardens. And with many wedding ceremonies held in the Ivy Leaf Chapel, a whimsical iron structure covered with Boston ivy, The Bungalow accommodation is also perfect for the bride & groom.

A spacious bedroom features a queen bed, dressed in premium cotton sheets, and there’s also a walk-in robe where you’ll find fluffy bathrobes to use during your stay. It’s a cosy nest in which to curl up with a loved one or good book. Just adjacent to the bedroom is a modern ensuite bathroom that makes bathing a luxurious ritual, with Washpool’s natural handmade soaps, body wash & haircare, fragranced with essential oils. An additional two guests can be accommodated on a comfortable sofa bed in the main living space.

During your stay, you’ll have direct access to your own private lounge and formal dining area. Full of character with high ceilings, restored polished floorboards, and furnished with antiques & vintage pieces including a piano, it’s a lovely welcoming space. Upon arrival, dust off the rush of day-to-day life and slow down to Tenterfield time with complimentary cheese, crackers & local wine. Light the fire, put your feet up and enjoy a movie on Netflix…listen to music, or play the piano. There’s also an extensive library with books & magazines to choose from. Both the bedroom and lounge open onto the gorgeous wide verandah - on warm days, settle back into one of the cane rocking chairs with your favourite book, as the scent of lavender & roses drifts up from the garden.

Included in your stay is a delicious country breakfast, including Kim’s homemade Deliciously Nutty Granola, yoghurt, milk, freshly-baked bread, butter and local preserves, juice, fresh fruit, selection of teas, and a Nespresso coffee machine. For an additional cost, there’s also a large selection of local wines available - essential for relaxing evenings spent out on the verandah.

Of course, a stay at The Bungalow Bed & Breakfast would not be complete without time spent exploring the garden. Meticulously designed and maintained, wander through the topiary, parterre and sculpted hedges, smell the roses, and find joy in the cottage perennials. Stroll through the Ivy Leaf Chapel, and choose one of the garden seats to sit and savour some quiet moments. With spectacular year-round displays, Kim’s incredible gardens will be featured on Better Homes & Gardens during their 2023 season. We’d suggest booking your stay at The Bungalow Bed & Breakfast, before everyone discovers NSW Tableland’s best-kept secret.

The Bungalow is just perfect. I can’t think of one thing that could be improved. The space is beautiful...cheese and biscuits on arrival... Breakfast was wonderful, especially the homemade muesli. The location is perfect - walking distance to everything and so quiet. The gardens have to be seen to be appreciated!
