History

This quaint little church, built circa 1877, provides an insight into the way of life along the Tamar River 150 years ago. The coastal township of Low Head is home to the Low Head Pilot Station, situated at the mouth of the river, with convict-built cottages and tall Norfolk Island pines dotted through the heritage precinct.

Established in 1805, Low Head Pilot Station is Australia’s oldest continuously operated signal and pilot station. In the early 1800s, when a sail was sighted at dusk, a fire was lit and kept burning all night to alert boats to the headland. In 1827, a decision was made to build a lighthouse. Completed in 1833, it can be visited today.

For several decades, church services were held at the local school house for pilots and their families; however following the introduction of the Bass Strait Electric Telegraph Cable, the population of Low Head increased. This prompted local farmers Mr & Mrs James Long to donate land for a community church to be built.

Constructed in the Carpenter Gothic style, the owners have sensitively restored Low Head Chapel to highlight its period beauty. This postcard-perfect chapel building retains significant original architectural features, including gothic arched doors and windows, striking coloured stained glass windows, soaring timber-lined ceilings, carved alter rails, and charming belfry. Sensitively restored to highlight its period beauty, Low Head Chapel now offers luxurious boutique accommodation in a picturesque seaside setting.

Open up the French doors onto a delightful sunny patio area with outdoor setting, a lovely spot to enjoy a cheese platter and local wine in the north-facing garden, with views to the sea directly across the road. And after a day of beach walks and exploring the Low Head heritage precinct, return to your luxurious bathroom for a long soak in the deep bath tub.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Chapel. The renovations are beautiful and the space is incredible. It has lots of fantastic touches and balances modern comfort with original elements. It was easy to find and check in, and we felt comfortable and content straight away. The bed and couches are super comfy, and the bathroom is amazing!
