Cleveland Winery Homestead, 1887

History

The Homestead at Cleveland Winery was originally built in 1887 by Mr James Clark Daniel as a family residence, and named ‘Cleveland’ after his birthplace in England. The property was first opened as a hotel in 2003, before a second accommodation building was added in 2007. A hallmark of Cleveland Winery is its historic underground cellar - the only one in the region, and a popular wine tasting destination.

Recently renovated after joining the Lancemore Group of award-winning boutique hotels in 2021, the Homestead is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. Each room features beautifully-preserved period detail, including intricate stain glass windows, cedar joinery, original polished floorboards, doors and windows; soaring ceilings with ornate cornicework, decorative moulding and ceiling roses, magnificent open fireplaces, and the original cast iron stove. You can take an interactive tour of the Homestead here.

Accommodation

Walk up the Homestead’s gravel drive and you’re greeted by an impressive red brick facade with climbing roses, box hedging, manicured lawns, and exquisite cottage gardens. Offering exceptional luxury accommodation, the Homestead has six bedrooms, sleeping up to 12 guests. With children of all ages and pets welcome, the Homestead is the perfect escape to the country for groups of family and friends, just one hour from Melbourne.

All guest bedrooms feature luxurious king-sized beds with quality linens, and have been elegantly designed with antique furniture, chandeliers, unique textiles, and contemporary artwork. Each has its own private ensuite bathroom with rainwater shower, plush towels, and Australian-owned Appelles amenities.

Unwind in the spacious, light-filled Conservatory that overlooks the courtyard, with striking vaulted wood-lined ceiling, greenery, large TV, and plenty of seating for everyone. Just off the Conservatory is a fully-equipped kitchen with modern appliances and coffee machine. The gorgeous formal dining area, with antique farmhouse table seating eight is perfect for dinners paired with local wines for the adults, while the kids watch a movie.

With its ink blue walls, remarkable wood-panelled gothic ceiling, sumptuous velvet circular sofa, stain glass windows and grand open fireplace, the opulent Lounge room is rich in history. Settle back with a glass of local wine in front of a roaring fire, and enjoy quiet conversation with loved ones.

The Homestead has complimentary WiFi access, and if you need to catch up on work, during your stay you’ll also receive 24 hour access to Cleveland Winery’s guest lounges, with both private and recreational spaces.

Surrounded by stunning established gardens with mature trees, stretches of lawn and gardens with perennials, relax on the wraparound verandah with your morning coffee, or in the courtyard garden with a glass of wine at sunset. There’s also a BBQ, so you can cook casual meals and dine al fresco.

On weekends, enjoy lunch or dinner at the Carriage House Restaurant, with uninterrupted panoramic views overlooking the vineyard and towards rugged Mt William beyond, with everything from woodfired pizzas for lunch, to fine dining on Friday and Saturday evenings. And why not book Cleveland Winery’s Bed & Breakfast package, which includes a full country buffet breakfast and wine tasting for two in the underground cellar door.
